On Saturday, October 12, LWVLM President Henrietta Saunders attended Illinois Governor Patrick Quinn’s announcement of the Illinois Coastal Grant awards at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.  The Lake Michigan League was one of ten awardees of this new grant program, which, in this initial round, funded education projects benefiting the Illinois coastline.   The project, “Stormwater from the Ground Up,” will educate coastal residents about how they may help prevent nonpoint source pollution of Lake Michigan.  Saunders said, “We are excited to get to work on this project, and honored to be among its first recipients.”

Check out all of wonderful projects funded by the Coastal Grants, along with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources nice summary of our project on its website:

“The project was born out of the April 18, 2013 storm in northeastern Illinois that caused widespread, destructive flooding.  Observing that most people did not understand how the storm sewer system worked, the Lake Michigan League of Women Voters will jointly conduct a campaign to educate citizens about problems associated with storm water runoff, emphasizing action that individuals, communities and regions may take to prevent and alleviate flooding after rain storms, with an emphasis on green infrastructure.”

The Lake Michigan League will give numerous Stormwater from the Ground Up presentations all along the Lake Michigan coast next spring and summer.  Please plan on joining us!
