Lake Michigan Leaguers Make a Big Splash at Great Lakes Lobby Day!
Be inspired by our LMLWV members who attended Great Lakes Lobby Days this March in D.C. First of all, become informed at the Great Lakes Restoration website.
Near the bottom of the page, go to “Find a Project.” You will see an amazing amount of projects – some probably in your neighborhood. Your legislators in Washington, D.C., are possibly unaware that there are even projects going on in your district! Let them know! Feel free to educate them about the history of GLRI, such as, it was started in 2004 by President Bush. Hopefully, at least $300 million will be budgeted this year to continue the projects, and more in the future.
Our LMLW members who went were quite pleased to take the concerns we share with the Healing Our Waters Coalition regarding Lake Michigan’s issues to Congress:
*Support Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Funding
* Pass Great Lakes restoration legislation
* Ask the Army Corps of Engineers to expedite its study of the Chicago Waterway System in its Great Lakes-Mississippi River Interbasin Study (GLMRIS)
If you’d like to educate yourself to better educate your legislators, click on any of the links at the Healthy Lakes Healthy Lives website.
Hi all,
I look forward to attending the conference. Last spring I had the honor of receiving a White House appointment to the Governance Coordinating Committee (GCC) for the National Ocean Counci (NOC)where I and David Naftzgar have been strong advocates for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. I have just returned from Washington where our workshop adressed the dynamics of setting up regional planninng boards across the country. The Regional Planning Boards will include federal, state, tribal and local input on how best to preserve and protect our oceans, coasts and Great Lakes using Coastal Marine Spatial Planning (CSMP)as one of the tools to accomplish the overall 9 point stratigic plan. The League can be a great partner in this initiative. I hope to have an oppertunity to discuss more of the iniative with you at some time in the near future. Joan P. Murphy
Cook County Commissioner, 6th district.
